How to Obtain a Certified Connecticut Vital Record
A copy of a certified Connecticut vital record may be obtained directly from:
1. the TOWN where the event occurred, or
2. from the STATE Vital Records Office
Town Vital Record Contact Information
Vital Records offices are located in each of the 169 towns in Connecticut. The vital records registrar in each town is responsible for maintaining a registry of all births, marriages, civil unions, deaths and fetal deaths that occur within its town. To obtain a copy of a vital record from the town where the event occurred, see the
Connecticut Town Clerk and Registrar Directory for contact and address information.
State Vital Records Office
The State Vital Records Office at the Connecticut Department of Public Health maintains a statewide registry of all births, marriages, civil unions, deaths and fetal deaths which have occurred in CT since July 1, 1897. For information on vital records prior to July 1, 1897, you must contact the town where the vital event occurred. See the
Connecticut Town Clerk and Registrar Directory.
If you wish to request a copy of a vital record from the State Vital Records Office, please note the State of CT is experiencing a lengthy turnaround time (greater than 3 months) for requests for birth, death, fetal death, marriage and civil union certificates that are received through the mail.
For quicker turnaround time you may direct your request
to the town where the event occurred (For a town address listing and telephone numbers, see the
Connecticut Town Clerk and Registrar Directory). Expedited Service is also available for an additional fee for requests ordered on-line via
VitalChek.
